Article সম্বন্ধে পূর্ববর্তী শ্রেণীতে তোমরা অনেক কিছু জেনেছ। এ অধ্যায়ের আলোচনা শুরুর পূর্বে নিচে A, An ও The-এর ব্যবহার সংক্রান্ত কয়েকটি Activity দেয়া হলো। নির্দেশ মতো সেগুলো অনুশীলন করো—A An: Some of these sentences need a/an. Article & Its Classification
Article এমন একটি word বা শব্দ যা কোন noun-এর নির্দিষ্টতা বা অনির্দিষ্টতা নির্দেশ করার জন্য noun-টির পূর্বে ব্যবহৃত হয়। সাধারণত A, An এবং The-কে Article বা বাংলায় ‘পদাশ্রিত নির্দেশক’ বলা হয়। A, An এবং The-কে determiner-ও বলা হয়।Article-কে দুভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। যথা—1. Indefinite Article2. Definite Article1. Indefinite Article: A এবং An দ্বারা যখন কোন অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু নির্দেশিত হয় তখন তাকে Indefinite Article বলে। যেমন-
I see a bird flying in the sky.
He is an honest man.
উপরের বাক্য দুটিতে a, an হচ্ছে indefinite article.2. Definite Article: The’ দ্বারা যখন কোন নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু নির্দেশিত হয় তখন তাকে Definite Article বলে।
যেমন-
The man is gentle.
The paper of this book is costly.
উপরের বাক্য দুটিতে The হচ্ছে definite article কারণ, এখানে the দ্বারা নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি ‘man’ ও নির্দিষ্ট বস্তু ‘paper’ নির্দেশিত হয়েছে।Article ব্যবহারের প্রয়োজনীয়তাArticle a, an, the মূলত adjective; কিন্তু adjective এবং article-এর মধ্যে পার্থক্য রয়েছে। Adjective-সমূহের Degree of Comparison রয়েছে, কিন্তু articles-এর Degree of Comparison নেই। Determiner হিসেবে একটি article এর পর একটি noun আসার ইঙ্গিত দিয়ে থাকে ।এছাড়া আমরা যেসব বিষয় বা বস্তু সম্বন্ধে কথা বলি সেগুলো বক্তা ও শ্রোতা উভয়ের কাছে পরিচিত, না কি অপরিচিত, article তা নির্দেশ করে। Article-গুলো noun-এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয় কিন্তু সকল noun, article-এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয় না। তাই কোন্ noun-এর article প্রয়োজন নেই, এবং প্রয়োজনের সময় কোন article-টি ব্যবহার করতে হবে তা জানা একান্ত প্রয়োজন ।Article ব্যবহার কতটা জরুরিArticle-এর সঠিক ব্যবহার English Grammar-এ অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়, যদিও অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে article-এর ভুল ব্যবহার খুব বেশি সমস্যা তৈরি করে না। এমন কি যদি আমরা কোন একটি sentence বা বাক্যে কোন article ব্যবহার না-ও করি, তাহলেও এটি স্বাভাবিকভাবে বোধগম্য হবে। যেমন—1. Can you lend me book of English Grammar till end of week? (article ছাড়া)
2. Can you lend me a book of English Grammar till the end of the week? (article-সহ)উপরের 1নং sentence-এ কোন article না থাকলেও বাক্যটি স্বাভাবিক অর্থ প্রকাশ করছে। তবে সঠিকভাবে article ব্যবহার করাই অধিকতর শ্রেয়।Use of Articles -এর ব্যবহার সংক্রান্ত আলোচনায় যাওয়ার পূর্বে আমরা পূর্ববর্তী শ্রেণীতে অর্জিত ধারণাগুলো আবার দেখে নেবো যাতে পরবর্তী আলোচনায় ব্যবহৃত Rule-গুলো বুঝতে সুবিধা হয় ।নিচের চার্টটি ভালোভাবে লক্ষ করো :Noun : Countable (গণনাযোগ্য)I eat a banana every day. I like bananas.
এখানে, banana একটি countable noun.Countable noun-এর একবচন (singular) ও বহুবচন (plural) হয়ে থাকে। যেমন- a dog—dogs, a child— some children, the evening –the evenings, this party— these parties, an umbrella — two umbrellas, ইত্যাদি।Countable noun-এর সঙ্গে সংখ্যা ব্যবহার করা যায় (eg. one banana, two bananas) ।Noun: Uncountable (অগণনাযোগ্য)I eat rice every day. I like rice.এখানে, rice একপ্রকার uncountable noun. Uncountable noun-এর একবচন, বহুবচন হয় না। Uncountable noun-এর সাথে সংখ্যা ব্যবহার করা যায় না। (one rice, we rice, etc.)
